Auckland Community Secures Council Support for Street Art Trail Expansion
A May 2026 walking tour and established trails highlight ongoing local efforts to maintain murals across the city centre and K Road.
How we reported this

A new walking tour launched in May 2026 celebrates 40 iconic street art murals in Auckland's city centre, covering artworks painted over the last 40 years and supported by Auckland Council. The tour focuses on the community movement that has kept these works visible through curation and maintenance.
K Road as Primary Hub
Karangahape Road (K Road) serves as Auckland's primary street art hub, featuring over 50 murals and works across the main strip and laneways as part of the established K Road Street Art Trail. Local residents and artists have contributed to this trail, creating a network of pieces that reflect ongoing community involvement in public art.
Recent Curations and New Tour
New artworks were curated in 2024 and 2025 for Auckland Council, including Holly Mafaufau's 'Tāmaki Makaurau' (2024) and a mural by Poi Ngawati on the Airedale Street steps. Notable large-scale murals include 'Hine', a three-story mural of Tania Cotter by Owen Dippie, and a critically endangered takahe painted by Flox (Hailey King) in the Britomart car park. These additions show continued collaboration between artists and the council to expand the collection.
Historic Murals Preserved
Historic murals remain in the city, such as the 1986 'Queen Street City Beat' graffiti mural by Otis and Dick Frizzell and John Radford's 1994 '…that was then, and that was then…' in Midtown. Preservation of these older works demonstrates the sustained community commitment to documenting Auckland's street art history across four decades.
Visitors can explore the K Road Street Art Trail or join the city centre walking tour for direct engagement with the movement. Auckland Council support for these initiatives provides a framework for future community-led additions and maintenance of existing pieces.
