Auckland CBD Serious Assaults Drop 22% Through Coordinated Agency Response
Police data shows fewer violent incidents in the central city after new beat officers and joint work with housing and social agencies began earlier this year.
How we reported this

Serious assaults recorded in the Auckland CBD dropped 22 percent between 1 January and 31 July this year compared with the same months in 2024, according to police figures released by the government. Assaults that caused injury fell 18 percent over the same period. The changes follow the deployment of 21 additional beat officers from July, bringing the total on foot patrol in the CBD to 51.
Meetings drive joint response
Regular meetings began in May involving Auckland City Council, Kāinga Ora, the Ministry of Social Development, Māori wardens, Community Patrol New Zealand, ratepayer groups, business associations and social service providers. The sessions focus on linking police with accommodation, addiction and family support services so officers can refer people instead of relying only on enforcement. Between 1 July and 10 September, 97 people across the Auckland City policing area received such referrals.
The same period saw a 68 percent reduction in households placed in emergency housing in the CBD, falling from 53 to 17. Two emergency motels have since closed. Auckland Council has noted an overall 35 percent drop in reported crime in the area during the coordinated effort.
Why residents notice the change
Businesses and residents in the central city have dealt with rising retail theft and street violence in recent years. The new beat staff increase visibility on foot, while the cross-agency work aims to address the underlying issues that keep some people cycling through emergency accommodation and street activity. Police Minister Mark Mitchell said the approach gives officers more options when they encounter people in crisis.
The government has also funded 500 extra sworn officers nationwide, with Auckland receiving a share of the increased presence. Officials plan to keep the monthly stakeholder meetings going to track further results and adjust referrals as needed.
