Pacific Youth Cricket Teams Compete at Auckland's Rangatahi Festival

Young cricketers from Pacific, Māori and South Asian backgrounds took the field at Lloyd Elsmore Park in East Auckland this week for the Rangatahi Cricket Festival. The event, now in its fourth year, featured boys’ and girls’ competitions across multiple teams and opened with a pōwhiri before full days of play on Wednesday and Thursday.

Event sets new scale for youth cricket

The festival has grown into a key gathering for culture and sport in the city. The edition included the Howick Pakuranga Invitational sides for the first time at the East Auckland venue. Matches ran across the two days after the formal welcome on Tuesday, giving secondary-school age players a high-level platform without leaving Auckland.

Local clubs and schools in the Howick and Pakuranga areas supplied teams that mixed with visiting sides from across the region. The shift to Lloyd Elsmore Park allowed more space for simultaneous games and easier access for families in the eastern suburbs.

Pathway for Auckland talent

Participants received exposure that supports progression into club and representative cricket within Auckland. The format keeps the focus on development rather than elite selection, with the quality of play reflecting the commitment from more schools and clubs each year. Families from South Auckland and central Auckland suburbs made up a large share of spectators, reflecting the city’s changing cricket demographics.

The event closed without a single overall winner, instead emphasising participation and cultural exchange. Organisers have already flagged plans to return to the same park next January, with early interest from additional invitational sides.
