Auckland Council Directs $2.5 Million to New Sports Fields in Ōrākei

Auckland Council has allocated $2.5 million to the Ōrākei Local Board specifically for new sports fields that will increase capacity for community football and cricket. The funding forms part of the council’s Sport and Recreation Grants Programme, which targets affordable access for diverse communities.
Council Funding Targets Community Fields
The $2.5 million investment comes as Auckland sides record strong results that rely on reliable local venues. Auckland topped the provincial rugby premiership with a 29-28 win over Taranaki, while Auckland FC sits eight points clear at the top of its league after a 4-4 draw with Adelaide United. These outcomes highlight how upgraded fields and training spaces support both participation and performance at community level.
Ōrākei Local Board will use the allocation to expand playing surfaces that serve football and cricket clubs across the eastern suburbs. The grants programme also partners with organisations such as Blind Sport New Zealand and Tuilaepa Youth Mentoring Services to remove cost barriers for young participants.
Stadium and Park Venues in Action
Established venues continue to host key fixtures. The One NZ Warriors are preparing for their 2025 NRL campaign, with a scheduled match against the Sharks at Go Media Stadium in Penrose. Lloyd Elsmore Park in East Auckland has hosted the Rangatahi Cricket Festival, the region’s largest youth cricket event, bringing together Pacific, Māori and South Asian talent in boys’ and girls’ competitions.
These sites illustrate the range of infrastructure required, from purpose-built stadiums to multi-use community parks. Auckland City FC has extended its reach by delivering free coaching and equipment to eight schools, reaching more than 2,471 students and supplying kits for 17 athletes to join Central United FC.
Youth Development Through Infrastructure Support
College Sport Auckland’s Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards, running since 1991, recognise secondary school athletes who train and compete on local fields and tracks. The Don Oliver Youth Awards 2025 in West Auckland similarly celebrate athletes aged 14-21 across swimming, cycling and gymnastics, with scholarships aimed at removing financial obstacles to high-performance pathways.
Weekly youth sport participation remains lower than pre-pandemic levels, particularly in higher-deprivation areas, reinforcing the role of sustained grants and field development in stabilising numbers. The council’s programme continues to prioritise organisations that improve access for young people across Auckland.
Further rounds of the Sport and Recreation Grants Programme are expected to open in coming months, allowing clubs and schools to apply for support that maintains and expands existing facilities.
