Auckland startups and scale-ups have advertised 1,240 tech positions since 1 June 2026, the highest six-week total recorded by the city’s job boards this year.

The increase follows a June funding round at two waterfront companies that freed cash for immediate recruitment, while several venture-backed teams moved into larger offices to accommodate new staff. Global shipping delays and higher costs for imported hardware have pushed local clients toward custom software instead, creating steady demand for developers who can deliver projects on site.

Wynyard Quarter and Britomart lead the hiring

Inside the GridAKL complex on Jellicoe Street, three portfolio companies opened 65 engineering slots last month for roles in API development and cybersecurity testing. Across Customs Street East in Britomart, the Icehouse accelerator reported that its 22 resident firms ran 48 interviews in the first week of July alone, mostly for product managers and cloud architects. Both sites sit within a short walk of the ferry terminal, where daily meet-ups at the Spark building on Federal Street now draw more than 90 attendees each Tuesday evening.

Pay and pipeline numbers

Figures released on 9 July by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce showed median pay for mid-level software engineers reached NZ$138,000, with senior cloud roles listed at NZ$172,000. The same survey of 92 Auckland employers found 41 percent plan to add headcount before September, citing contract wins with local banks and logistics operators. Entry-level coding bootcamp graduates from the University of Auckland’s City Campus programme can expect starting offers around NZ$82,000.

Job seekers should register for the next GridAKL open day on 22 July and update profiles on the Auckland Tech Talent platform before the end of the month, when several firms expect to close shortlists for Q3 starts.
