Auckland Residents Discover 10 Free Activities This July Amid Rising Costs

Aucklanders packed the trails at Cornwall Park on Saturday morning for walks that cost nothing beyond a bus ride from the central city.
Household budgets have tightened in recent months. Petrol prices climbed above $2.40 a litre at many stations on Dominion Road last week while grocery bills rose at Countdown outlets in Newmarket and Grey Lynn.
The Auckland Botanic Gardens in Manurewa opened its gates at 8am daily with no entry fee. Staff recorded 1,200 visitors on the first Sunday in July. The same weekend the Auckland Central Library on Lorne Street ran free craft sessions for children between 10am and noon.
Harbour walks and city parks
Quay Street along the waterfront draws joggers and families every evening. The path runs from the Viaduct Harbour past the ferry terminal and continues to the Maritime Museum without charge. At Albert Park in the CBD, volunteers from the Auckland Council maintain free guided walks on the second Saturday of each month.
Winter daylight hours shorten quickly after 5pm. Locals use the extra time for indoor options that also carry no ticket price. The Waitematā Local Board funds story-time sessions at the Grey Lynn Library every Tuesday at 10.30am.
Numbers and next steps
Auckland Council visitor data from the 2025 financial year showed 2.8 million recorded visits to its 3,800 hectares of regional parks. That figure excludes the many people who simply use neighbourhood reserves. Ferry fares on the Devonport route stand at $9.50 return for an adult, but the 20-minute walk along the waterfront from the terminal requires no payment.
