Auckland Council released updated trail ratings on 8 July that classify 12 walking routes by exact distances and four difficulty tiers based on elevation gain and surface conditions.

The ratings arrive as cooler July temperatures draw more Aucklanders outdoors for regular exercise after a wet June that limited park use. Council data shows regional park visits dropped 18 percent last month compared with May figures, prompting renewed promotion of accessible routes near central suburbs.

Two sites feature prominently in the new list. Cornwall Park in Epsom offers a 3.4km loop around the formal gardens and olive groves rated easy with under 50 metres of climb. The Auckland Domain near Parnell provides a 5.1km circuit that mixes flat paths and gentle slopes through the Wintergardens area and is marked moderate.

Easy and moderate routes near the city centre

Both locations sit within 4km of the CBD and connect to public transport stops on Manukau Road and Parnell Road. Auckland Council’s Parks and Recreation team added new signage at these spots in April 2026 after feedback from the Active Auckland programme that tracks monthly participation.

The council report cites 1.8 million recorded trail entries across all regional parks in the 12 months to June 2026. Of those, 620000 visits occurred at the eight routes rated easy or moderate, with average group sizes of 1.7 people per entry.

Practical steps before heading out

Walkers can download the council’s free trail map app that lists current track conditions and estimated times. The moderate 5.1km Domain circuit typically takes 75 minutes at a steady pace, while the Cornwall Park loop finishes in 50 minutes. Participants should check weather updates on the council website before starting and carry water on any route longer than 4km.
