Grey Lynn residents have added four new weekly mental health sessions at the Richmond Road community gardens since March 2026.

The shift follows a steady rise in local demand for free, walk-in support that does not require appointments or travel across the isthmus. Auckland Council data released in May showed a 38 percent increase in residents seeking community-based wellbeing activities within the inner-west suburbs compared with the same period in 2024.

From soil beds to structured groups

Volunteers at the Grey Lynn Community Garden now run a Tuesday evening circle that pairs light gardening tasks with 45-minute facilitated talks on stress and sleep. A second site at the nearby Western Springs community plots launched a Saturday morning program last month that includes breathing exercises led by trained facilitators from the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand. Both locations sit within a short walk of the Grey Lynn shops and the bus stops on Great North Road.

Coordinators say the model grew out of informal chats that began during the 2025 planting season. Participants now register on arrival rather than through formal referrals, and sessions cap at 12 people to keep the setting informal.

Practical steps for residents

Anyone can attend without prior booking by arriving at the Richmond Road entrance between 6:30 pm and 8 pm on Tuesdays or at the Western Springs gate from 9 am to 11 am on Saturdays. The Mental Health Foundation lists both programs on its Auckland events page, and printed schedules are available at the Grey Lynn Library branch on 474 Richmond Road. A small donation box covers tea and basic supplies, though no fee is required.

Citywide data from the foundation’s 2025 annual report recorded 14,200 contacts through community-led activities in Auckland, up from 9,800 the previous year. Organisers expect the Grey Lynn sites to add one more evening slot by September if current numbers hold.
