Chorus expanded its fibre-to-the-premises network this week to deliver 2Gbps download speeds in 18 additional Auckland suburbs, a direct shift that job seekers and office workers must factor into their connectivity plans starting immediately.

The change arrives as hybrid work arrangements remain standard for tech, finance and creative roles across the city, where applicants now face video assessments and shared document platforms that demand consistent upload speeds above 50Mbps. Professionals who fall back on older ADSL lines or congested 4G backups risk dropped connections during peak morning hours between 8am and 10am.

Suburbs and hubs seeing the fastest rollout

Workers based near the Wynyard Quarter offices or along Symonds Street in the central city can now order the new 2Gbps tier through Spark or One NZ without waiting lists. Job seekers attending interviews at co-working spaces in Parnell or Mount Eden should verify their home connection matches these speeds before scheduling live video calls, as several recruitment firms in those neighbourhoods have begun requiring test uploads of portfolio files larger than 500MB.

Auckland Council’s digital inclusion program, which subsidises modems for low-income residents in Glen Innes and Onehunga, reported 1,200 new sign-ups in the past month alone, indicating the upgrades are reaching beyond high-income households.

Costs, speeds and next steps for users

Current pricing lists the 2Gbps plan at NZ$119 per month with a 12-month contract, while the 1Gbps option sits at NZ$89, figures published by Chorus on 9 July. Average measured download speeds in tested central Auckland addresses reached 1.8Gbps during off-peak periods according to the company’s July network report, though evening congestion on shared neighbourhood nodes can drop that figure by 30 percent.

Job seekers should run a speed test through the Chorus app before submitting applications that require large file transfers, and professionals managing multiple cloud accounts ought to request a free ONT upgrade if their current equipment dates from before 2023. Those planning moves within the next six months can check the Chorus coverage map for their target address to avoid signing leases in areas still limited to 100Mbps plans.
