Aucklanders logged record visits to nearby hiking routes in the first week of July as daytime highs stayed under 14 degrees Celsius. Regional park counters recorded 18,000 entries across monitored sites between 1 and 7 July, up from 14,200 the same week last year.

Residents cite shorter daylight hours and rising fuel prices as reasons to skip longer drives. Instead they choose half-day outings reachable by bus or ferry from the CBD. The shift aligns with Auckland Council’s push to promote green spaces within 30 kilometres of the central business district.

Waitakere Ranges and Rangitoto Island draw steady crowds

The Waitakere Ranges offer multiple entry points off Scenic Drive, where the Auckland Council maintains 250 kilometres of tracks. The Piha Road car park fills by 9am most weekends, forcing late arrivals to use the overflow area near the Piha Surf Club. On the opposite side of the harbour, Rangitoto Island’s summit track starts at the ferry wharf and climbs 260 metres over 2.4 kilometres. Fullers360 runs six return sailings daily from the downtown ferry terminal, with the first departure at 7.30am.

Both locations sit inside the Auckland Regional Parks network, which covers 42 sites and 87,000 hectares. The council’s summer-to-winter comparison shows July foot traffic on the two sites combined reached 9,400 last week, the highest July figure since 2019.

Costs and access details for weekend planning

Fullers360 charges $36 for an adult return to Rangitoto, with the ticket valid for six hours ashore. The council’s Piha car park remains free, though rangers issue $200 fines for vehicles left overnight. Guided options include the Department of Conservation’s free Rangitoto volcano walk on 19 July, limited to 40 participants and booked through the DoC website. Public transport users can reach the Waitakere trailheads on the 113 bus from Newmarket, which stops at the Arataki Visitor Centre.

Check the Auckland Council website or the Fullers360 app before leaving home. Book ferry spots online the night before and carry a printed or downloaded track map, since mobile coverage drops in several Waitakere valleys. Early starts remain the simplest way to secure parking and avoid the afternoon rain showers forecast through the rest of the month.
