Aucklanders logged more than 850,000 visits to regional parks in the first half of 2026, according to Auckland Council figures released this month.

July marks the start of the school holidays and cooler weather that draws families outdoors before spring crowds arrive. The trend follows months of higher domestic travel costs that have kept more people inside the city boundary rather than flying north or south.

Two spots within easy reach of central Auckland stand out. The Waitakere Ranges offer multiple marked tracks reached from the end of Piha Road, while Cornwall Park provides shorter loops around Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill that start from the entrance on Green Lane West. Both sites sit inside Auckland Council-managed reserves with free entry and maintained facilities.

Trail options this month

The Piha Road entrance to the Waitakere Ranges leads to the Kitekite Falls track, a 3.2-kilometre return walk that takes most walkers two hours. Rangers reopened the full route in late June after winter maintenance. At Cornwall Park, the One Tree Hill summit path runs 1.8 kilometres from the park gates and passes the old crater rim with views across the isthmus. Both locations provide car parks that fill by 10am on weekends.

Visitor data from the 2025/26 financial year showed 1.2 million total entries across all Auckland regional parks, with the Waitakere area accounting for 22 percent of that total. Day passes for guided group walks at the same sites start at $18 for adults and run every Saturday through August.

Check the Auckland Council website or the council’s Parks app before leaving home for track status updates and parking availability. Book any paid activity slots online at least 48 hours ahead to secure a place.
