Auckland operators have added three new tour routes this month that focus on volcanic cones and waterfront paths, with first departures set for July 15.

The added routes respond to steady demand from residents who want structured outings during the cooler season without leaving the region.

One route begins at the Auckland Museum in Parnell and moves through the Domain before ending at the Sky Tower observation deck. A second starts from the ferry terminal at Devonport and covers the naval museum plus the old gun emplacements on North Head.

Both routes are run by the same company that operates the Auckland Explorer Bus service.

Harbour and cone routes draw attention

The Viaduct Harbour loop now includes a stop at the Maritime Museum on Hobson Wharf, where participants board a small vessel for a 45-minute circuit of the inner harbour. The volcanic cone walk on Mount Eden covers the crater rim path and the adjacent cemetery, with groups limited to twelve people.

These additions sit alongside the existing Queen Street heritage walk that leaves daily at 10 a.m. from the Aotea Square information centre.

Bookings through the Auckland Tourism board website reached 4,200 in the first week of July, up from 3,150 in the same week last year. Adult tickets for the new harbour circuit cost NZ$65, while the Mount Eden walk is priced at NZ$35 and includes entry to the museum cafe.

Next steps for participants

Tickets can be purchased online or at the Aotea Square desk up to 24 hours before departure. Morning slots on weekends fill first, so mid-week dates after July 20 still have openings. Participants are advised to wear layers and bring rain jackets, as the forecast for the next fortnight shows showers most afternoons.
