Over 50 new murals have gone up across Auckland since the start of 2026, giving residents and visitors fresh walls to explore on foot.

Street art has become a reliable draw for Aucklanders looking for low-cost cultural outings during the cooler months when indoor galleries see shorter visiting hours. The city's Public Art Strategy, updated in late 2025, set targets for more commissions in high-traffic zones, and several projects reached completion in the past six months.

Key Neighbourhoods and Routes

Karangahape Road remains the densest stretch, with large-scale pieces running from the Mercury Lane corner down to the Symonds Street overpass. Further west, the Wynyard Quarter waterfront added six new works along Jellicoe Street in March, including a 12-metre panel on the side of the historic diesel shed. Both areas sit within easy reach of regular bus routes and the downtown ferry terminal.

Practical Details and Next Steps

Auckland Tourism recorded 12,000 participants on organised street art walks in 2025, a rise of 4,000 from the previous year. Self-guided maps are available for NZ$12 through the council website, while guided Saturday tours from the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki cost NZ$35 and run at 10am and 2pm. The next batch of commissions is scheduled for unveiling along Parnell Road in September.

Start at the top of K'Road near the Mercury Theatre, follow the trail markers for two hours, then catch the Link bus to Wynyard Quarter for the waterfront section. Carry a rain jacket and allow extra time to photograph details before light fades around 5pm in July.
