Q Theatre opened its new production on July 9 with every seat taken for the first four performances at the 300-capacity space on Queen Street.

The timing aligns with Auckland's winter arts calendar filling up after a slow start to the year, when fewer international tours reached the city and local companies stepped in with new work. Audiences are responding to pieces that draw directly from New Zealand stories rather than imported scripts.

Venues drawing the crowds

Performances at Q Theatre sit alongside shows at Silo Theatre's space in the Wynyard Quarter, where a smaller run of devised work began previewing last weekend. Both spots sit within easy reach of the CBD train stations, and season passes sold through Auckland Live have moved faster than in 2025. Residents in Grey Lynn and Ponsonby mention the shows in the same breath when they meet at weekend markets.

Local detail comes from the companies involved. Auckland Theatre Company supplied the core cast while a collective of recent university graduates handled movement direction. The production runs through August 2 with extra matinees added on July 25 and 26.

Ticket numbers and next steps

Auckland Live reported 12,400 tickets sold across its mid-year theatre programme by the end of June, a 14 per cent rise on the same period last year. Single tickets at Q Theatre start at $42, with concessions at $28. Bookings for the remaining dates are handled through the venue website or the Auckland Live box office at Aotea Square.

Anyone planning to attend should check the site now, as the added shows are already more than half full. Walk-up tickets are released 30 minutes before curtain only if capacity allows.
