The Basement Theatre on Auckland's Lower Greys Avenue extended its run of the devised work "Night Ferry" through July 25 after selling out the first six performances within 48 hours of tickets going on sale July 8.

Residents have cited a desire for shared indoor experiences during the winter months when international headlines about shipping routes and distant fires dominate screens at home. The timing aligns with the start of the mid-year theater season, when companies typically launch new works before the spring arts calendar fills.

Two Auckland venues driving the current talk

Silo Theatre in Freemans Bay opened its season with a new adaptation of a local script at the same time the Auckland Theatre Company launched a workshop series at its ASB Waterfront Theatre on Jellicoe Street. Both programs feature casts drawn from the city's acting pool and draw on stories set in the Waitematā Harbour area, giving audiences direct references to familiar streets and suburbs.

Box office data released by Auckland Live shows 2,400 tickets sold across these two organisations in the first nine days of July, up from 1,900 in the same period last year. Average prices sit at NZ$38, with concession rates at NZ$25 for students and seniors at both venues.

Next steps for interested audiences

Remaining tickets for "Night Ferry" are listed on the Basement Theatre website, while the Auckland Theatre Company workshop sessions require advance registration through its office on Quay Street. Walk-up options remain limited, so checking daily updates on the respective sites offers the clearest path to attending a show before the current runs close.
