Auckland Council opened two new multi-sport hubs last month, adding 14 floodlit fields and an indoor training centre to the city’s youth sports network.

Youth participation in organised sport here has risen 22 percent since 2023, driven by population growth in outer suburbs and renewed school programmes after the pandemic. The increase puts pressure on existing pitches and changing rooms, especially on weekends when club competitions run back-to-back.

The new hub at Colin Maiden Park in St Johns includes four artificial turf fields sized for under-13 and under-15 rugby and football. Another facility opened at the Western Springs Reserve, where two hockey pitches and a 400-metre athletics track now operate under LED lighting installed in June 2026.

Local venues handling daily demand

Both sites sit within easy reach of state highways, allowing teams from Manurewa and Glenfield to reach training sessions in under 30 minutes. Auckland Sport and Recreation reports that bookings at these two venues alone reached 1,850 hours in the first fortnight after opening.

City records show Auckland spent $38 million on youth sports infrastructure between July 2024 and June 2026. That figure covers the new hubs plus resurfacing at 11 existing neighbourhood parks. Average construction cost per artificial field came in at $1.9 million.

Next steps for clubs and families

Clubs can apply for winter 2027 field allocations through the council’s online portal starting 1 August. Families seeking trial sessions at the new St Johns or Western Springs sites should contact their local sports code directly, as both venues open for community use outside school hours from next week.
