More than 4,200 Aucklanders took part in organised weekend matches across rugby, football and netball on July 4 and 5, with several clubs posting open recruitment notices this week.

Interest has risen sharply since the start of the school holidays, when families and shift workers seek regular mid-week training slots that fit around work and family commitments in the city.

Victoria Park fields hosted eight football games on Saturday while the netball courts at the Mount Albert War Memorial Pool complex ran full rounds on Sunday, both sites managed by Harbour Sport programmes that feed directly into Auckland Rugby Union pathways at Eden Park.

Registration costs and season dates

Season fees begin at NZ$85 for senior social teams and NZ$45 for juniors, covering insurance and ground hire through to the final round on September 12. Players must supply their own boots and mouthguards, though clubs at both Victoria Park and Mount Albert loan bibs and balls for the first two sessions.

Steps to join this month

Contact Harbour Sport by email before July 18 to receive a trial schedule, then attend one evening session at either venue to meet coaches and complete a basic fitness check. New members receive a club hoodie after their fourth paid training night and can transfer between codes without extra cost if space allows.

Those without prior experience should arrive 30 minutes early for a short rules briefing and are paired with a mentor for the first match. The same process applies at the Auckland Domain touch fields, where mixed social teams meet every Tuesday at 6:30pm.
