A new multi-use court complex at the Mt Roskill Recreation Centre opened its gates on 8 July after months of weekend work by residents clearing rubble and laying surfaces along Dominion Road.

The project shows how neighbourhood groups now fill gaps left by larger funding delays, with participation in Auckland community sports climbing since the start of 2025. Families in the area report fewer options at school grounds during peak hours, pushing clubs to create their own spaces rather than wait for central decisions.

Suburbs Drive the Build

Residents in Mt Roskill teamed with the Papakura Sports Club on Great South Road to share equipment and coaching rosters. The two sites now run joint training sessions on Tuesday evenings, drawing players from both the central isthmus and south Auckland without relying on city-wide grants. Local businesses supplied paint and netting at cost, cutting the final bill by an estimated third.

Records from the Auckland Council leisure unit show 2,450 new registrations for organised sport programs in the first half of 2026, up from 1,980 in the same period last year. Court hire at the Mt Roskill site stands at $45 per hour for community groups, a rate set after a vote at the club annual meeting in March.

Next Steps for Players and Clubs

An open training session for all ages is scheduled at the Mt Roskill courts on 18 July at 6pm. Interested residents can register through the Papakura Sports Club office or the Mt Roskill centre desk before the end of the month to secure a spot in the winter schedule.
