Auckland recorded 71,400 children and teenagers enrolled in organized sports for the 2025-26 season, according to data compiled by Auckland Council’s Sport and Recreation team and released on 9 July.

The increase arrives as families respond to local health campaigns and school timetables that now include more structured activity periods after the disruptions of recent years. Parents in central suburbs report signing children up earlier than before to secure spots, with registration windows at several clubs closing by mid-August.

Programs drawing new numbers

Clubs operating out of Cox’s Bay Reserve in Grey Lynn and the ASB Stadium in Kohimarama have posted the largest gains, with football and netball sessions filling faster than in previous years. The Auckland Football Federation added three extra junior teams at the Cox’s Bay site this season to handle demand, while netball coordinators at ASB Stadium extended Saturday morning slots by two hours to accommodate 120 more players aged 9 to 13.

Fees remain a factor in choices, with junior memberships at the Ponsonby Rugby Club listed at $265 for the full season and swimming squads at the Tepid Baths charging $180 for a 12-week term. The council report notes that 62 percent of new participants joined team-based activities rather than individual fitness classes.

Next steps for families

Parents can check availability for the spring term through the Auckland Council website or by contacting clubs directly before the next registration deadline of 15 August. Several neighbourhood parks, including the fields at Victoria Park, will host open trial sessions on weekends through July to help families match children to suitable programs.
